Guide to Edinburgh: BON TOT
Today we would love you to meet Kristina, Graham, Clemence & Frisco - the family behind an independent clothing & toy brand for wee ones BON TOT. We have asked Kristina some Christmas-related questions so you can get to know them a little bit better. Share our love for Edinburgh's independent boutiques!

1. TELL US ABOUT YOUR BUSINESS & THE ETHOS BEHIND YOUR BRAND

We are a kids clothing and toy retailer and we came to be after becoming pregnant with our daughter Clemence. We just became different consumers and realised there was a gap in the market locally for what we wanted. We have just a few priorities: clothing must be made using transparent, sustainable methods to ensure it is a humane process. Most items are made by a team of 1-5 people. Second, the clothing and toys must last and wash well. The price is a bit higher so the point is for them to be handed down between siblings, cousins and friends. And third, they must be comfortable for children Which means the best cotton and fleece and muslin you can find. And designs that assist in the playful nature of children.

 2. WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE THING TO DO IN EDINBURGH DURING CHRISTMAS?

Oh my gosh our family loves Christmas! We always  go to Santa’s grotto, I mean all kids love that! And last year Clemence went ice skating for the first time so that will be another tradition for us. All the shows at the Lyceum, the Festival Theatre  and the Kings Theatre. We do love the markets and also beach walks in Portobello on boxing day! There is the best vibe in Edinburgh around Christmas, there are endless things to enjoy. Of course when we are on our own we love a cosy pub!

 3. WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE THING ABOUT WINTER?

I like the moody lighting. The cosy feelings. Being inside with my family for movie nights. Besides that...not much!

 4. WHAT DO YOU LIKE MOST ABOUT WORKING DURING CHRISTMAS?

I love the buzz! I’m a people person so I love seeing everyone out and about and talking to them about who they are buying for, where they will be spending the holidays, what they’ll be eating, that kind of thing! I’m quite nosey but because I’m genuinely interested in what folks are up to. Also, I can’t help it, I just love seeing the shop so busy.

 5. WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE CHRISTMAS FOOD?

Mashed potatoes! Sugar Cookies! Fudge! Actually we are in the process of figuring out what exactly we want to be our traditional Christmas food; I eat a vegan diet and I do the cooking, so we are really looking forward to finding our style for Christmas.

 6. WHAT WAS THE BEST CHRISTMAS PRESENT YOU EVER RECEIVED?

A plane ticket to Edinburgh because I ended up falling in love and the rest is history!

 7. WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE CHRISTMAS SONG?

My very favourite Christmas song is Oh Holy Night sung by the one and only Sufjan Stevens.

 8. WHAT IS YOUR CHRISTMAS WISH THIS YEAR?

Ah, only one: that we are able to move into our new house in time to get fully decked out for Christmas! (currently undergoing extensive renovations and it will be a total squeeze to achieve this but we are highly motivated by the idea of cookie baking, carol singing and tree decorating!)
